One World (Rockfort, 1995) Seeing this American band's corny name and low-budget album cover, I was prepared to dismiss this album totally. And, while it is bad, it's not without its niceness. Specifically, "My True Love" and "Easy Ragamufin," which utilize the same waist-winding, bass and horn-heavy reggae riddim. Additionally, a surprisingly adept, understated lovers cover of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" will make you want to serenade your lover by lifting a boom box over your head in the rain. . . or something like that. Sadly, beyond these 3 tunes, One World provides the crap-fest you would expect: upbeat, crossover pop reggae, ranging from the early '90s hip-hop/Soul II Soul sound of "Kiss U Feel It Up" and "Got To Get Away" to the pop dancehall of "Heartbroke" to the sappy straight R&B of "Trust in Me" to the wannabe "Flex" of "Legacy." Although there is potential here, listening to One World, there is little wonder why you've never heard of them. |
