2 Heavyweight: Another Blood & Fire Sampler (Blood & Fire, 1997) With Blood & Fire having a more expanded catalogue of albums than when its first sampler, Heavyweight Sound, came out in 1995, this edition has more consistent quality, but it's still not as good as it could be (i.e., not as good as Blood & Fire's Dubwise & Otherwise). A couple of great tunes anchor this compilation, however: Glen Brown's vintage, echoing dub "World Dub: Away With the Bad" and the discomix of Phillip Fraser's rocking, so-funky-it-reeks "You're No Good." Also quite strong are Prince Alla's "Only Love Can Conquer" and Prince Jammy's "Drums of Africa," a dub version of "Time Will Tell." As with all of Blood & Fire's stuff, this album features heavy roots, toasting, and especially good old school dub. Prince Alla and Phillip Fraser's "Black Rose" and its dub, "Great Stone," epitomize the sound in which the label specializes. |
