500% Dynamite (Soul Jazz, 2001)

This is the fifth in the Dynamite series from Soul Jazz Records.  As the series goes on, SJ has decided to include '80s and '90s reggae.  They should be congratulated for educating the compilation buyer about the early dancehall and digital age.  500% Dynamite has a broad remit and combines dub from Augustus Pablo and Joe Gibbs with classic soul from Marcia Aitken and a little "Bam Bam" from Toots & The Maytals. It manages to combine great packaging with some damn fine funky tunes.  Loads of compilations are out there, but this deserves a second glance, even if it’s just to hear the doorbell on "African Dub Chapter Three."
