Abijah

Abijah (VP, 2003)

Although almost 30 years of age, Andrew "Abijah" Smith has the look and sound of 10 years his junior.  This isn't necessarily a bad thing; it's just that he has a baby face and a light, youthful singing voice that resembles a young member of the Marley clan (or perhaps more precisely, the Marley-esque Nasio Fontaine).  With such a marketable sound, it's surprising that he is just now releasing his debut album, especially considering the fact that he's been surrounded by reggae music all his life (his father was a drummer with Count Ossie's Mystic Revelation of Rastafari).  This self-titled set grabs you from the very start with "Children of Love," a poignant acoustic ballad sure to produce goose bumps, followed by the rousing African sound of "Revelation".  Very little after that shines quite as brightly, but although it peaks early, the album remains solid throughout.  Abijah is certainly in touch with his sensitive side, with nary a touch of negativity nor fire and brimstone in any of his lyrics.  What might be refreshing to some listeners, however, may be too lightweight for others.  "The Rock," for instance, has a meditative, pious feel that may soothe some and may bore some.  (I personally like the sound here, but not so much at other spots on the album.)  The music tends to be airy and upbeat, mixing roots with old fashioned lovers rock, soul, and gospel flourishes.  Only the hip-hop-infused "Why" and the digital "Rootsman Take Over" (which rides the same riddim as Tanya Stephens' wicked "It's a Pity") have any tangible edge, which means that this sound might not appeal to listeners of harder-edged music.  On the other hand, it's a very accessible style that could easily draw in the casual reggae fan.  I'd compare Abijah's stuff to the some of the softer works of Morgan Heritage and LMS -- which means he can be a bit saccharine and poppy at times -- as on the pop/gospel "Where Is the Love" and "Fall to the Ground."

Abijah Moving 2 the Top

Moving 2 the Top (Azion, 2008)

Abijah has taken an eternity, reggae-wise, to release a follow-up to his debut album, and Moving 2 the Top might further test his fans' patience early on. The opening title track is a poppy dancehall-infused tune, which is followed by the uninspiring dance/hip-hop track "Where Has the Love Gone." Later, the inexplicably straightforward jazz/R&B ballad "Be Happy" arrives D.O.A. However, he settles down with "Tribute," a nice reworking of Marvin Gaye's "Abraham, Martin and John" (originally a Dion tune) with Bob Marley, Marcus Garvey, Garnett Silk and Dennis Brown substituted for Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr. and John Kennedy. "Lovin' Girl" and "Heaven Knows," meanwhile, are soothing lovers tunes that suit Abijah's singing voice well. "Overcome," a duet with MIA R&B singer Tevin Campbell, scores on a light roots level, while "State of Emergency" features Abijah chatting inna sing-jay stylee with surprising ease, exhibiting the perfect balance of edge and gloss that sometimes eludes him. The highlights, though, are "Nah Give Up" and "Rasta Love," a pair of roots jams that embody the sound he should be going for more often than not. Unfortunately, he strays away from it a few more times, on the sappy Michael Jackson cover "Music & Me," the depressing ballad "My Best," the over-stylized Terrence Trent D'Arby-ish "Be My Love," and the horrid "Bad Boyz," an unconvincing dancehall tune in which the whispy singer tries to convinces us of his badness. It's an uneven set, but Moving 2 the Top has more ups than downs. Although he waited five years to release the album, Abijah has packed it with 19 tracks (including a remix of "Revelation" and a live version of "No More War" from his first album) to keep his fans satisfied...for another five years?
