Strong
Love
(Dub Front, 1997)
I’m
not sure what Acceptance is exactly -- a collective of reggae artists, perhaps
a terrorist cell -- but one thing is clear: they must be stopped.
Or at least,
some of them must be stopped. I'll cut them some slack on the
cheesiness of the material here; since this album is several years old, its
sound is somewhat dated. Still, even in 1997, I doubt this was anything
close to a good album. The few decent tracks -- "Don't Fight,"
the bouncy roots of "Go For It," and the Macka
B-ish old school
dancehall of "Government Man" -- don't compensate for the poppy hip
hop, dance, and dancehall of tunes like "Wademdo,"
"Corrupted," and "Jail Life," not to mention the pedestrian
sound of "Woman" and the title track. To add insult to injury,
there's a batch of remixes and dubs that, if possible, are worse than the
originals. Albums like this make me hypothesize that, in general,
dancehall outside of Jamaica is a risky proposition.
