Togetherness (Prestige, 1994) Kudos to Prestige Records for exposing the general public to under-appreciated and overlooked reggae artists like Anthony Johnson (and Roland Burrell and Devon Russell, et al.), who puts forth a series of tender love songs with good ol' fashioned reggae rhythms on this wonderful collection. "Goodbye" and "If I Follow My Heart" are the best of these love songs, while "Togetherness" and a cover of New Birth's "Wildflower" -- here called "She's Faced the Hardest Times" -- are quite enjoyable as well. The best song on Togetherness, though, may well be his version of Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds," a sensational slice-of-life tune with a rumbling early dancehall rhythm. As a general rule, such fairly obscure artists released on Prestige are worth the relatively low price of the album. While the album is cheap, the exposure is priceless. |
