Antz Nest (JamDown, 2000) What can you say about a one-riddim album? They take a rhythm and play it over and over and over…and over.Antz Nest is actually one of the better ones. The pulsating digital beat is unspectacular yet solid; it actually helps that it doesn't stand out too much so that it's not so obvious that you're being beaten over the head with it. Plus, the performers pepper the tracks with lively, fun lyrics and charismatic vocals. For a dancehall compilation, there is surprisingly little slackness, gun lyrics, or braggadocio. Beenie Man's ode to marijuana dealing "Hundred Dollar Bag" is the most recognizable tune, its spirited call-and-response structure creating an instantly infectious jam. Other tracks are likewise fun and free-wheeling, from Goofy's humorously optimistic "Things Could Be Worst" to Captain Barkey's "Roll On" (which, from what I can decipher, discusses the merits of deodorant) to the Bullwinkle-like vocals of Mexican & Slingshot's "What Time Is It" to Kiprich's insane (literally) "Bellevue." More serious-toned cuts "Wha Dis Fadda" by Madd Anju, Goofy's "Too Much F@#kery a Gwaan," and Ward 21's "Thug World" provide ample support to a worthwhile set...if you're OK with one rhythm. |
