Step By Step (Classic Sound, 1994) This is a surprisingly nice album from a relatively unknown singer who displays a talent that begs recognition. While Scott doesn't have the greatest voice in the world, she puts forth a sultry style that leads itself to the well-written lovers tracks on Step By Step. She seems to be at her best when crooning deeply over slow, sad love songs, giving them an almost bluesy or old-time jazz feel. The 3 best songs here -- "Goodbye My Love," "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps" (also recorded by Dennis Brown) and "I'm All Alone" -- exemplify this wonderfully melancholy style. Aside from the occasional light dancehall rhythm, Step By Step is mostly lovers rock as it should be done. Not every song is great, but all are at least OK (and one, a cover of the standard "Brandy," provides an intriguing look into Scott's sexual orientation?), and all of them come together to form a nice atmospheric package. |
