Bad Weather (VP, 2000)

I figured that this was probably a one-rhythm album when I saw it (Hint: the title is a short, catchy phrase that seemingly has little to do with reggae, or music in general.), but it was used, so what the hell.  As they are merely one person's opinions, reviews are subjective, as one's evaluation of the album is based largely on just whether or not you can get jiggy with the beat.  The Bad Weather riddim isn't unique and may not initially grab you, but for me, it has staying power.  Its raw, undiluted hardcore dancehall sound is sure to energize dance floors and get heads nodding.  Veteran producers Steely & Clevie alter the flow of the musical elements (drums, bass, vocal snippets, digital effects) enough to keep the rhythm fresh through most of the 15 variations, no small feat in my eyes (and ears).  The performers included are generally top-tier (with the exception of Phoebe One -- who? -- who puts forth a rapping/singing mish-mosh), and their skills shine on cuts like Lexxus' "Redder Now," Degree's "Your Highness," Wickerman's "Bad Weather," Elephant Man's "Bad Weather," and old-school Burro Banton's "Order of Distinction."  Bad Weather is certainly one of the better one-rhythm albums I've heard (for what that's worth), but again, if you happen to not like the rhythm, you're S.O.L.
