Basque Dub Foundation Meets Loud And Lone (Brixton, 2002)

*GUEST REVIEW*
A friend who came back from a trip to Spain provided me with a copy of this album. And damn, what a pleasant surprise. Basque Dub Foundation, a band with some underground reputation for its live shows, brings back the '70s roots feel, though heavily influenced by dub, and hits this roots-string only very few contemporary reggae artists still manage to hit. BDF's heavy music, the dubby production, and the wailing, intelligent, vocals that Loud and Lone puts forward on this album are just plain quality. Especially the airy "Judgement Time," "Hope," and " Breaking The Rules" (that melodica line!) are instant classics. Almost each song also has a dub version, which are nice, but, as with most dub versions, not special. Anyway, it might be pretty hard to put your hands on this album, but it's worth it. It's definitely worth it, and my guess is this album will be a collector's item pretty soon.
