| The Biggest Reggae One-Drop Anthems 2006 (Greensleeves, 2006) Greensleeves' double-CD year-end overviews, whether digital dancehall (Biggest Ragga Dancehall Anthems) or roots reggae and lovers rock (Biggest Reggae One-Drop Anthems), are as close to a sure thing as you'll find in reggae today. Greensleeves is generally a dependable label, and when they cram 40 tracks onto two CDs for the price of one, you can't ask for much more. OK, you can, but then you'd just be a pig. The only thing you could maybe complain about is that Greensleeves tends to repeat artists a bit, particularly those who released albums on the label during the year. Thus, we get a healthy dose of Fantan Mojah, Jah Mason, Natural Black, Lutan Fyah, Sizzla, and Norris Man (although you have to wonder where Nasio Fontaine is). Even if you have these artists' albums, though, there's plenty of other niceness to be found. There are even a few potent tunes that I don't think were previously available on CD, like Gyptian's "Sensi" (adapting Barrington Levy's "Under Mi Sensi") and a pair of the best ganja anthems in recent memory: Italian sing-jay Alborosie's "Herbalist" and singer Marlon Asher's "Ganja Farmer." The first disc is the stronger of the two, although it repeats several tracks from Strictly the Best 36 ("The Real Thing," "Beautiful Lady," "Do You Know," "What Will It Take"). It features the Chuck Fender's epic "Gash Dem," the superior Fantan Mojah/Jah Cure combination "Nuh Build Great Man," the Sizzla gem "One Love" (from Waterhouse Redemption), Natural Black's "Never Quit," Lutan Fyah's sufferers' tune "Equal Share," and Ras Shiloh's "This Generation," which is basically him grumbling about "kids these days." Whippersnappers! The second disc starts off strong, with Fender's response to the banning of "Gash Dem," "Freedom of Speech," Chezidek's "Inna di Road," Jah Mason's "Couple Chalice a Day," Sizzla's "Chant Dem Down," and Ras Shiloh's "Rastaman Up in the Hills," but fades quickly, only resurfacing near the end with Sizzla's lovely "Show a Little Love." Still, Biggest Reggae One-Drop Anthems 2006 has more than enough to satisfy your roots and lovers rock hunger pangs. |
