Dread Locks Dread (Virgin, 1975)

*GUEST REVIEW*
DJ albums should bring new life to dub, roots or rock steady tracks.  Dread Locks Dread uses a variety of tracks to great effect.  How can anyone listen to "Marcus Garvey Dread" without being moved to dance?  This is an example of an amazing roots track that gets extra energy from the toasts and emotion that Big Youth injects.  A harmonica is used to rather interesting effect on a few tracks.  This gives a bluesy feel long before the Skip McDonald/Adrian Sherwood project "Little Axe" was born.  Errol Thompson engineers the tracks to great effect and the players are the Skin, Flesh and Bones band.  Dread is a nice album, even if you are not a great fan of DJ albums.  It's a chilled dread album with a fair few dubs and some nice positive messages.  Twilight Circus has recently worked with artists such as Big Youth, and it's easy to see why.

Natty Universal Dread (Blood & Fire, 2001)

*GUEST REVIEW*
Marley Augustus Buchanan, or Big Youth as most know him, is one of the legends of toasting. Natty Universal Dread collects seven years of Youth-produced material from the 1970s. This is a fine collection of rare toasts over rootsy dubs. Despite the strong rasta and roots philosophy Natty still has a sense of humour. It also has guest vocals from U Roy, Leroy Smart, Junior Byles, and Gregory Issacs. The riddims are well produced and are utilised well by Buchanan. He combines singing, toasting, and beat ducking to enrich each track. He even gets a little soulful on "Streets in Africa," alongside Dennis Brown and the Heptones. A three-CD set by any artist, let alone a toaster may suggest a lot of filler, a cash in, or a boring listen. Natty is none of these. Now if only someone would compile all the best reggae Peel sessions onto a compilation.
