Get Up and Try (Makafresh, 2007)

On the heels of his work with Takana Zion, French producer Manjul brings us Bishob, a sweet, soulful singer from Nigeria whose Get Up and Try is a true highlight of 2007. Bishob's vocals are immediately striking: warbling, impassioned, and high-pitched, often reminiscent of Terrence Trent D'Arby. Manjul's music is buoyant, top-notch roots -- with touches of lovers rock ("Burning in My Soul") and ska ("Hot Time im Freetown") -- propelled by driving bass lines and soaring horns. If this album doesn't get you on your feet, you might need hip replacement surgery. Even with the party sounds, though, the lyrics -- in English, written primarily by Sierra Leonean writer Ian Abioseh Johnson -- are often sobering, as indicated in titles like "The Roads From Ills," "Broken Record," and "Culture of Racism."
