Burial (Hyperdub, 2006)

*GUEST REVIEW*
No one really knows how to classify dubstep. For example, recent issues of The Wire have featured it in the dub, critical beats, and electronica sections. Much beloved by Mary Ann Hobbs, 'step has yet to break the mainstream. Burial's debut sounds best through headphones; this is twisted and mutilated house that respects the history of dub. It's slow and probably a little scary for most dance floors, but progressive reggae fans will enjoy the space and bass waves that feature in most tracks. At times ambient, without being chill-out, this is as close as Faust will ever get to house music. Like a lot of dubstep, this album is a soundtrack in search of a film.
