Da Original Banton (Massive B, 1995)
*GUEST
REVIEW*
Not as well known as Buju, but equally hardcore, Burro Banton is one of the original gruff-voice DJs. And I mean gruff;
picture a constipated Prince Far I with a sore throat, chatting at double speed. Suffice it to say that if your tastes run mostly to smooth singers like
Jah Cure or Garnett Silk, this is not the album to get. But of all the hip-hop influenced DJs spanning the
'90s (think
Red Fox, Jamalski, etc.), Burro is hands down the best, as evidenced by the wicked hip-hop remix of
probably the biggest hit on this collection, "Boomwadis" (original on the "street sweeper"
riddim). There is also a WICKED hidden track, a hip-hop cut of "Westmoreland Sensi From." The massive
bass line and rugged lyrics are an irresistible combination. Most of Burro's best work is with Bobby Konders of the Massive B crew, and this collection gathers the biggest hits.
