Rudi EP (Fenetik, 2004)

REVIEW*
Despite over 50 years of depopulation, Glasgow is
still Scotland's largest city. Musically it's still associated with twee
indie, noisy post-rock and "singers" turning country classics into no
go areas. Mungo's Hi Fi and The Butch Cassidy Sound System are welcome dub
additions to the Glasgow music scene. Butch Cassidy basically appears to
be Michael Hunter. His debut album is called Butches Brew, and this
EP has two album tracks and a couple of extras. Hunter certainly loves his
back catalogue of reggae but also has a strong passion for soul and funk.
The tracks are nice and seemingly simple but manage to integrate more samples
than the average hip-hop track. The cover of "Cissy Strut" will
keep most dance floors jumping. Butch produces soulful reggae without
going too wonky. It seems like Butch Cassidy is another reason to visit
Glasgow besides Optimo, Mono, the CCA and Charles Rennie McIntosh.

| Butches Brew (Fenetik Music, 2004) *GUEST REVIEW* Like your one-man reggae bands? Well, Twilight Circus might be too dubby for you, Pole a bit clinical, and The Bug might bash you a little too much. Another option is to investigate the Butch Cassidy Sound System. Butches Brew is Michael Hunter's first album, and is an altogether fun affair which was recorded in 21st century Scotland. This is upbeat, funky reggae that would fit in perfectly well on DJ sets by Norman Jay, Madlib, and Giles Peterson as well as one of the uber cool Soul Jazz compilations. Its basically an instrumental album that relies heavily on samples of classic vocals and riddims. Check out the Junior Byles "Fade Away" samples on "Hear what I say" for example. An enjoyable album that borrows heavily from dub, funk and roots. It's not claiming to be innovative but has a lovely fresh sound that non-reggae fans will lap up. - ragudave |
