What Kind of World (Heartbeat, 1991 [orig. released 1970])
You might think you haven't heard anything from The Cables, but chances are
you have, indirectly. The classic rhythm from "What Kind of
World" was recycled for a slew of tunes in 2000, most notably Morgan
Heritage's "Down By the River," Freddie
McGregor's "I See It in You," and Sanchez's
"Pretty Little Girl" (all included on the one-rhythm album Down
By the River). Unfortunately for fans, The Cables' career was
short-lived, Studio One's What Kind of World being their only
album. Still, it's an enduring set, with strong tunes like "Baby
Why," "Be a Man," "What Am I to Do," and "No New
Love," in addition to "What Kind of World." The sound of
this album is consistent with "What Kind of World": upbeat rock steady
with R&B melodies and sweet vocals reminiscent of The
Mighty Diamonds. Although there is some classic material here, I would
stop short of calling the entire album a classic, though it's worth a listen as
the only testament to The Cables' legacy.
