Classic Reggae Volume 1 (Profile, 1992) Reggae compilations have a tendency to exaggerate the greatness of the album in its title (e.g., The Best Reggae Album in the World. . . Ever!), but in this case, the name is appropriate -- this is quality stuff. Practically all killer, no filler ("practically" because I don't care for Dillinger's "Cocaine in My Brain" much, though it's considered by many to be a classic), this collection's greatness lies in its selection. In a genre where so many compilations contain the same "classics," the compilers here have managed to put together a group of golden material that is not readily available on other such collections. The album has two types of music: late '70s to mid-'80s mellow reggae -- such as Sugar Minott's bouncy remake of "We've Got a Good Thing Going," Tyrone Taylor's dreamy "Cottage in Negril," and Dennis Brown's infectious "Sitting and Watching" -- and a more up-tempo early dancehall stylee -- with favorites such as Johnny Osbourne's "Buddy Bye," Half Pint's "Greetings," and Pinchers' "Agony." I can't even mention all the great songs here. Let's just end by saying that since this was released in 1992...Where the hell is Volume 2?!? |
