Natty Dread in a Greenwich Farm (Striker Lee, 1975)

Cornell Campbell's sweet falsetto carries the listener through this light, enjoyable -- although perhaps a tad overrated -- album, generally considered the singer's best.  While I wouldn't call it a classic, Natty Dread in a Greenwich Farm provides some very nice moments, particularly the rock steady/early reggae sounds and old-fashioned R&B melodies of his covers of "Duke of Earl," "I Am Just a Country Boy," and "Why Did You Leave Me To Cry."  Perhaps the best track here, however, is the supple, whispered classic "The Sun," which Frankie Paul would remake into a hit some two decades later (see Strictly the Best Volume 10).   "Lost in a Dream" and "Girl of My Dreams" further showcase Campbell's subtle yet solid songwriting talents.  Although the two "Greenwich Farm" songs were both hits, I didn't find either as appealing as the tender love songs that dominate this album.

I Shall Not Remove 1975-80 (Blood & Fire, 2000)

*GUEST REVIEW*
Cornell Campbell has sung with The Uniques, The Eternals, and on his tod.  This compilation showcases the strength of the partnership between him and Bunny Lee.  The material dates from the second half of the '70s and consists of familiar melodies coupled with roots and rasta sentiment and Tubby's mixing skills.  So you end up with 11 extended tracks that features sweet vocals of CC as well as guests such as Dr. Alimantado and Ranking Dread.  It's as rootsy and well-produced as the first Prince Alla set on Blood & Fire.  The cover may feature Cornell propping up a Mark 1 Ford Escort, but the tracks are certainly not dated or as lacking as the car.  Despite the recent period of civil unrest on the B&F message board, it's a great idea to listen to their output and forget about internet politics and netiquette.
