Alone Tonight (Ginger Girl, 2005)

*GUEST REVIEW*
A renowned doctor, scientist and biomedical researcher who moonlights as a reggae singer? Odd but apparently true. Cosmo Fraser has earned all manner of acclaim in the medical field as well as recording three reggae CDs. His latest, Alone Tonight, is a decent mixture of pop reggae, lover's rock and roots, sung in a snappy growl that bounces off the riddims nicely. And lest anyone think he's just goofing around, the presence on this disc of such key reggae players as Fully Fullwood (bass), Horsemouth Wallace (drums), and Tony Chin (guitar) tends to show otherwise. Indeed, the catchiness and solid construction of such songs as "Something Bad is Troubling Me" and "Inside my Head" have an easygoing, Joe Higgs-type quality that suggests this guy could quit his day job if the medical profession could do without him. Still, it's not a perfect album: The opening "Get up and Jump" relies heavily on what sounds like a cheesy vocoder, some uninteresting rapping by Cosmo's son intrudes on a couple of tracks, and there are moments that sound a little too sterile and keyboard-heavy. Small matter. This disc has enough strength, charm, and genuine reggae vibes to keep your regular doctor away.
