Dancehall Shotta (Jamdown, 1999)

A typical JamDown release, Dancehall Shotta is not particularly bad, not particularly good, not particularly anything.  You can generally expect three things from the label:

1)      Dancehall.  If you want hard-hitting, hardcore dancehall (with a slackness option) with very little pop inclination, JamDown's your place.

2)      Recycled rhythms.  At best, you’ll have 5, 6, maybe even 7 rhythms spread out over 14 or so tracks (as on Dancehall Shotta), so if you hate a particular beat, chances are you’ll hear it on a couple of other songs.  Sucks to be you!  At worst, of course, you might be stuck with a one-rhythm album, which could result in justifiable homicide.

3)      Mediocrity.

There is some decent stuff on Dancehall Shotta, headed by Alley Cat's fierce "Don't Care," as well as Big Star's "Hey Pretty Gal" (which adapts Rita Marley's "One Draw" melody), Zeno's Mr. Vegas-like "Stop Chat," Serial Kid's Ghost-like "Shy Guy Look" and Sean Paul's Sean Paul-like "Hot Already."
