| Darker Than Blue: Soul from Jamtown 1973-80 (Blood & Fire,
2001) *GUEST REVIEW* Most reggae fans appreciate the bonding that this genre has with gospel music, jazz, the blues, soul and even country and western. Previously the Soul Jazz people have released Studio One Soul, which documented reggae artists covering soul. That compilation was good, but just a little too wonky to be played repeatedly. Soul from Jamtown is the same concept but different. This is a slight departure for the normal dub, roots or toasting release from Blood & Fire records. However, the departure is welcome and is about as easy listening that B&F will ever get. The tunes on here are classy, have a high volume of funk but essentially are tales of everyday struggle. Most are covers which manage to avoid the cheese element. The packaging is first class with some very passionate and professional photos showing trauma and soul in Brixton, Wolverhampton, and Jamaica. - ragudave |
