Umoja/20th Century Debwise (Blood & Fire, 2004)

*GUEST REVIEW*
Are dub albums overrated? Or does the space within them create attention span problems? This is a B&F reissue of two relatively overlooked dub albums. Both were produced by Dennis Brown and mixed by Prince Jammy at Tubby's studio in the late seventies. Ryan Moore (AKA Twilight Circus) rated this album highly for the quality of the drumming in a recent interview. However, non-drummers out there should not be discouraged. The production is stripped-down but tune-driven. Jammy provides a mixdown that's worthy of a King without being too showy. "Open The Gate of Rhodesia" and "Sons of Dust" are highlights of this interesting, if long, set.
