Dancehall Kings (TVT, 1995)

This is one of those albums that you can listen to and hear numerous songs that strike you as good, but afterwards, looking back at it as a whole, you see it as just average.  Indeed, little of this material leaves a lasting impression.  The best tunes here include Terror Fabulous' "Old Dog," Garnett Silk's "Watch Over Your Shoulder," and Sanchez's "Brown Eye Girl" medley.  Bounty Killer appears on no less than four of the tracks on this compilation, the three duets with singers each being better than his bland "Dead This Time."  His minimalist remake of "No No No" with Dawn Penn and "Benti Uno" with Pinchers are good, but would actually be better without his vocals; the singing is that intoxicating.   Another standout -- for better or worse -- is Kim Swain's (who?) "Here We Come," a somewhat annoying song featuring a catchy R&B melody and that borrows Bob Marley's "Kinky Reggae" rhythm to produce a tune made for the mainstream market.  With its unique sound, though, "Here We Come" sticks with you longer than any other track on Dancehall Kings, showing that while some of them are good, they have a long way to go to be great.
