Dancehall Xplosion: The Remix (Blazing Flames, 2006)

Like its Reggae Xplosion companion, this "remix" of the Burning Flames/JamDown stalwart Dancehall Xplosion features an impressive lineup of big names riding riddims that are a few years old, but as the old saying goes, if you haven't heard 'em, they're new to you!  Lukie D and the previously M.I.A. Red Fox set the tone in both style (hard-hitting dancehall) and substance (chorus: "Do me like a real freak should!") with "Up & Down," riding the pounding militaristic Hennessey riddim that also buoys Mega Banton's solid "Back Down."  The next riddim, Trample, is a more energetic affair highlighted by Elephant Man's hyperactive "Fire."  Bounty Killer's cool yet dangerous delivery is as engaging as ever on the Showdown riddim-driven "Which One," and sound-alike Merciless's performance on "It's Me" holds up well by comparison.  The Energy riddim is the most uninspired of the bunch and not surprisingly results in uninspiring cuts from Spragga Benz, Assassin, and Chico.  Turbulence turns things around, though, on the infectious "I Love Her So," featuring the most striking beat on the album, the percussive Escalade.  Duets from Mr. G & Kirk Davis (ex-Little Kirk) and Patchie & Shadoo continue the party vibe, which carries into "Ha No Your Fault," whose chanting chorus serves as an appropriate climax to this solidly entertaining set.
