DJ Red Alert's Propmaster Dancehall Show (Epic, 1994) Being a predominantly hip-hop DJ, it makes sense that this compilation is predominantly hip-hop reggae (with the remaining four tracks being dancehall). Not surprisingly, the dancehall songs are the weakest parts of the album (apart from the annoying interludes), with Shaka II's "Black Busta" being the best -- even though little Vicious' "The Glock" was more popular. The best cuts are the ones that put forth a fun, old-school feel by using vintage hip-hop beats or dancehall rhythms, or a combination of the two, as on Sugabear & Silver's dynamic "Boom fi di Red Alert" and "Papa Props," Red Fox & Naturally's send-up of Guy's "Let's Chill," and Daddy Sylva's "Stretch to Fit." A couple of hip-hop remixes of popular dancehall tunes are decent as well: Shaggy & Rayvon's "Big Up" and Red Fox & Screechie Dan's "Pose Off" (Cutty Ranks' "Living Condition" remix is not as special.). |
