The Dot.com Rhythm (V1, 2001) I've given up trying to figure out the true appeal of one-rhythm albums. Two, three, four, five rhythms, I can buy into, but one is bound to get dull quickly. Anyway, as single-rhythm albums go, this one is a bit of a stand-out. The rhythm in question (the "Dot.com Rhythm") isn't anything groundbreaking, but its light, fun, up-tempo vibe is contagious. The bulk of the best uses of the music comes at the beginning of the album, not coincidentally where the bulk of the well-known artists are. In particular, Capleton's "Log On Girls" and Sizzla's "Girls Them Me Love" stand out with playful, screeching vocals, although both DJs uncharacteristically (and somewhat refreshingly) chat about girls and not religious or social topics. Stevie Face's duet with DJ D'Bad Dawg "Something About You" -- where I first heard this riddim -- is likewise solid, as is Frisco Kid's "Girls Sport" and the Spragga Benz/Assassin/Red Square collaboration "More Girls" (a lot of "girls" on this album, eh?). Little-known artists Jah Thunder, U.T. Ras, and Danny English (whose gruff old school voice resembles Red Dragon) provide ample support on this freewheeling album (although the "Dot.com Rhythm" does get a bit tired). |
