Dub: Original Bass Culture (Union Square, 2001)

*GUEST REVIEW*
Union Square specialises in budget-price compilations that are put together with a degree of care.  Basically, they package the music well with decent sleeve notes and covers.  Original Bass Culture has detailed notes about the origin of each track and some cool photos to get you in the mood for version.  Sixteen tracks of high-quality dub grace this album.  King Tubby, Lee Perry, Prince Far I, and Niney The Observer all get a track or two.  Trying to explain dub and its appeal to non-reggae fans is always a struggle, but one play of Bass Culture is worth ten thousand words.  The empty spaces, humour, drama, bass, echo and psychedelic are all here. This is one of the best compilations for dub newbies.  Who can resist any album that includes the deranged "Black Bat" by The Upsetters
