From the dubby mind of Doctor Echo comes this compilation of his collaborations with local talent in the Sacramento, California area (thus the "Sac" in the title; that's my explanation, at least, and I'm sticking to it). The good doctor has quickly established himself as a reliable source for quality dub music -- sort of like a Good Dubkeeping Seal of Approval -- and Dub Sac is no exception. Who Knows' "Dub Anthem" is a chunk o' funk with a delicious electro keyboard riff that sounds like it could be the theme song for a 1970s cop show...in space. International Farmers' "Bassy Man Dub" features a slinky hep cat bass and a swelling churchy organ that lends a certain gravitas. Shocks of Mighty's "Everyday Is a Dub Day" is a lovely take on the Sensations' classic "Everyday Is a Holiday," a personal fave of mine featuring one of the all-time great horn lines. Most of the album, though, is devoted to the band The Storytellers, who provide one of the best tracks in the funky "Fighting in the Streets Dub," as well as the solid "Dub Down the Walls" and "Jah Dubs Each and Everyone." It's enough to make you search out the individual acts themselves...which you're welcome to do; it's a free country, after all. Those longing to hear the doc himself, meanwhile, are treated to a couple of interludes that are almost more than interludes, clocking in at over two minutes each.Overall, fans of good old-fashioned rootsy dub should find plenty to enjoy on Dub Sac, although there's enough of a modern twist to please those who prefer a more polished sound.
