Based on a True Story (Fat Freddy's Drop, 2005)

REVIEW*
Though it's not strictly a reggae album, reggae fans will enjoy
this offering from New Zealand-based band Fat Freddy's Drop (who've also recorded under the name DJ Fitchie and Joe Dukie). Reggae is the main
beat they employ, but they work in dollops of soul, jazz, and electronica as well. Their songs tend to be long and laid back, with a recurring
dubwise approach over much of the album. Their vocals and lyrics are dry, understated and surreal, their rhythm section is effortlessly tight
and their horn section in particular is killer. At times the disc wanders and relies too heavily on a downtempo vibe that leaves you
longing for the reggae beat to kick back in, which in the end it always does. And the quality of the musicianship and production are strong
throughout. I'd recommend this one if you're looking for a take on reggae that's a bit different but bold in its own offhand way.
