Full Up: More Hits from Studio One (Heartbeat, 2006 [orig. released 1983])

The companion to The Best of Studio One, Full Up has likewise been "fully" re-mastered and stuffed with extra tracks (six of 'em), some of which have never been released on CD before. The selection here is a bit more obscure than on Volume One, but you still get all-time faves like Willie Williams' "Armagideon Time," The Paragons' "Danger in Your Eyes," Carlton & The Shoes' "Love Me Forever" (later made famous by Dennis Brown), Bob Andy and Marcia Griffiths' "Always Together" (which she remade with Cutty Ranks as "Really Together" in the early '90s), and the instrumental "Full Up" (most recognizable from The Mighty Diamonds' "Pass the Kouchie"). Some of you might also recognize the dreamy "Mr. Fix It" (covered by Sugar Minott), The Royals' "Pick Up the Pieces," The Cables' "What Kind of World" (which had an entire rhythm album built around it in the '90s), and Slim Smith's "Rougher Yet," whose riddim propelled Sanchez's "Missing You" to massive success. The second half of the album is distinctly less well-known, but reggae veterans may be pleased to uncover harder-to-find tunes like the dark "Big Mistake" by The Bassies and early snapshots in the careers of cultural icons Burning Spear (who sings lyrics from "I'm a Little Teapot"!), The Ethiopians, and Culture. Sure, not all of this may be the "best" Studio One has to offer, but it's still an intriguing mix, a never-dull slice of history.
