A History of Dub: The Golden Age

A History of Dub: The Golden Age (Munich, 1995)

Appropriately titled, this exceptional album has the feel of an abbreviated history lesson, an efficiently put together overview of dub music at its height of innovation and inspiration, the mid-70s through the early '80s.  Every one of the acts included here is legendary and highly influential -- in the case of Culture, Israel Vibration, Horace Andy and Black Uhuru, in roots reggae more so than in dub.  If you're just a beginning listener, A History of Dub will give you great exposure to these and other vital artists -- like Glen Brown, Niney the Observer, and Prince Far I -- all of whom perform rootsy, old-fashioned '70s dub music.  Listen to this album alongside Shanachie's In the Red Zone, and you'll have a solid foundation to become a longtime dub fan.
