| History of Tamoki Wambesi (Tamoki Wambesi, 1994) *GUEST REVIEW* Tamoki Wambesi is a collection of Roy Cousin productions from the '80s. Even the most casual reggae fan will have heard of some folks on here They include Don Carlos, Prince Far I, Cornell Campbell, Earl 16, and The Royals. For the most part, the roots here are produced in a muddy Wackies style although some tracks recall lighter Sly and Robbie arrangements. It could be quite easy to place this compilation beside all those Trojan box sets that promise a lot but fail to deliver. However, in common with other reggae compilations, Wambesi is at its best when the listener isolates a track or two. PFI's "Stop the War" and the Cornell Campbell number stand out and sing from the same hymn sheet, although Far I has the more forceful message. Roy C works his sweet magic for the Gaylads and it sounds lovely. This is a dub free zone, which seems rare in roots compilations these days. - ragudave |
