If DJ Was Your Trade: The Dreads at King Tubby's 1974-1977 (Blood & Fire, 1994) *GUEST REVIEW*This is the first album that premium reissue label Blood & Fire released. It's a compilation of DJs, chanters and toasters who got recorded at King Tubby's in the mid 70s. Dillinger, Prince Far I, and Prince Jazzbo all contribute a track or two. Lesser-known artists such as Little Roy and Jah Stitch are also included. The dubs are typically heavyweight affairs, and sound just about right with the added toasts. This album is full of natty anthems such as "In the Ghetto" and "Black Harmony Killer" with their perfect dubwise chants. Some people claim that singing or nattering over a track is straightforward and anyone do it. But walk into any karaoke bar and try and avoid tutting, or try it yourself and see what happens. An essential album for fans of toasting and Tubby productions. - ragudave |
