Inna Rub a Dub Style Numba 3 (DownSound, 1995) This collection of songs is similar to "Numba" 2 in that it contains a lot of hip-hop reggae (this one even more so), it has rhythms that are used on multiple tracks, and it features several of Bounty Killer's cronies. The big difference between the two is that this one is good. The beats -- provided by the same producers as "Numba 2," Andrew Prendergast and Johnny Rivers -- are not killer, but are steady. Additionally, the artists perform well, especially the stylistic looniness of both Nuff Nuff on "No Escape From the Dance Hall Gate" and Elephant Man (on an early performance from the future superstar), who borrows the melody from "O Come All Ye Faithful" (!) on "Thief Man From Seaview." Less wild but no less impressive are Alley Cat's short-but-sweet "How the West Was Won," Linton Tony's "Proud" -- which alternates between hip-hop and dancehall beats to magnificent effect -- and Lukie D's guilty pleasure "Oh What Joy U Bring" -- which usurps Madonna's "La Isla Bonita" melody. |
