| Irie Reggae Hits: Best of Chill (Time Life, 2006) What do you do after you go to the dancehall? You chill! Thus, Time Life releases the second part of its Irie Reggae Hits series (also available as on two-disc set), presumably as a more laid-back, rootsy alternative to Best of Dancehall. If this is the goal, then Best of Chill succeeds, although there's nothing "chill" about T.O.K.'s "Gi Gi Winer," a high-energy, soca-styled number that annoys in that special, T.O.K. way. On average, though, the songs on Chill are better than those on the first release. That said, the song selection here is much less adventuresome, packed with compilation standards like "Zungguzungguguzungguzeng," "Wa-Do-Dem," "Kaya," "The Same Song," "You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)," and crossover hits like "No Letting Go," "Wild World," and "Bad Boys." The most unexpected tracks -- "Gi Gi Winer," "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" (another from Is It Rolling Bob?; what the...?), "Throw Down Your Arms" -- are also the worst, making for a mixed bag packed with great, but routine, songs. This set is more suited to newcomers to reggae who either don't know these tunes yet or don't have them in their collection. |
