In Paradise (Trojan, 1994)

This collection is not valuable so much in the greatness of the songs (since they're not truly great) as in the overall exposure it provides to Jackie Edwards and his timeless style.  His romantic vocals light up this group of rock steady and early reggae tunes that feature a soulful edge.  The title cut is a gorgeous tune that, if not a remake, certainly sounds like a cover of a '50s or '60s R&B song.  "You're My Future Wife" likewise boasts a strong R&B melody, while "My Love and I" and "I Must Go Back" are straight Motown soul.  Though only marginally reggae, these tracks are so fun and well-made, you don't really care what genre they fall into.  "Miss Black and Beautiful" and "I Do Love You" are more reggae-like, but are no less enjoyable.  If only the second half of this album were as unique and purely entertaining as the first, this would be a great album.  Since the latter half isn't so hot, In Paradise is just OK, but Edwards is someone to whom everyone should be exposed at some point.
