Jack in the Box: The Black Scorpio Compilation Volume 1 (Relativity, 1995) Renowned dancehall producer Jack Scorpio deserves a better compilation than this. For a release on a fairly major label (and a label that produced the excellent Lethal Riddims '93), Jack in the Box is a pretty sad product. This certainly can't be the best of Jack Scorpio's productions -- his '80s work with Yellowman comes to mind -- as none of the songs is really much to listen to. The biggest hit here probably is Beenie Man's "Praise Dem," a frankly overrated nothing of a song. Most of the tunes on Jack in the Box are similarly blah, with only Satelite's Garnett Silk-like (natch) "Tribute to Garnett Silk" and Everton Blender's "Dem a Fight" rising to the level of merely above-average. |
