Colombia Colly (Island, 1976) I'm not a huge fan of the '70s "toasting" styles of DJs like U-Roy, Prince Jazzbo, and Dennis Alcapone, but this album really struck a chord with me, simply because of the magical talent of producer Lee "Scratch" Perry. If you're gonna toast over anything, it may as well be a Lee Perry rhythm. Heck, you could flick your teeth over a Perry rhythm (which I'm sure Perry has done), and it could still be good. Jah Lion's (AKA Jah Lloyd's) DJ skills are fine but not terribly extraordinary or unique, but he at least had the foresight (Actually, I don't know how much input he had in the process.) to choose some of Scratch's best beats, from "Words of My Mouth" (used on "Wisdom") to "Police and Thieves" (on "Soldier and Police War") to "Fever" ("Hay Fever") to "Kentucky Skank" ("Flashing Whip") to "To Be a Lover" ("Little Sally Dater"). Jah Lion even adds a cover of the Abyssinians' immortal "Satta Massagana" ("Sata"), all but assuring a decent album. Sure, some listeners might find this lack of unoriginality cheap, but that's pretty much how toasting is, isn't it? |
