Jah Son Invasion (Wackies, 1982)

*GUEST REVIEW*
Jah Son Invasion is a great title for a compilation. It contains 10 splices of Wackies finest sounds. In typical style, it's heavy and relatively uncommercial, and features quite a few lesser-known artists such as Azul and Jerry Harris. However, Sugar Minnott and Barrington Spence get a track each. Jah Skerta gives us a very emotional "I Who Have Nothing", and Azul lightens the mood somewhat with a fluty dub. Despite the dark riddims and heavy production, this is the Wackies compilation I recommend to newbies. The only letdown with this reissue, as with all Wackies is the dearth of sleeve notes to tell us a little more about the individual artists and recordings. If anyone ever tells you that JA is the only place decent roots was produced, give them a borrow of this album.
