King Tubby's Hidden Treasure (Trojan, 1999)
More predictably solid material from the triumvirate of producer Jah
Thomas,
mixer King Tubby, and band Roots
Radics. Indeed, you could file this album
under any or all of the 3. Hidden Treasure collects a host of roots
and dancehall riddims (the pre-digital dancehall outshining the generic digital
music on "Pearl Dub," "Emerald Dub," and "Hidden
Treasure") in a somewhat gimmicky "treasure chest" package that
at times promises more than it can deliver. Still, there are several
towering cuts, like "Crown Dub," "Diamond Dub," "Gold
Dub," "Platinum Dub," and the funky "Ruby Dub."
Tracks like the bouncy "Jewel Dub" (whose music was used in Lone
Ranger's "Rub and Scrub," Everton Blender's "Blow Your
Nose," and countless other songs) and "Brass Dub" (a take on the
Mighty Diamonds' "Have Mercy") will likely sound familiar, but most
everything else is rather run-of-the-mill, neither bad nor good. If you
want to hear a collaboration between Thomas, Tubby, and Roots Radics that more
closely meets its full potential, check out King Tubby meets Scientist in a
World of Dub.
