Jam Down Vibrations (Scratchie, 1996) A slightly above-average dancehall collection that stands out mostly because of its attractive packaging (and what a package!). That's not to say there aren't some nice tracks here, though. "Mix to the Max" -- a mix of songs by Singing Sweet, Joseph Stepper, and Simpleton -- and Ghost's high-pitched vocals on "Your Style" provide lethal dancehall vibes. On a more conscious tip, Cocoa Tea's melodica-infused "Babylon Is Burning" and Garnett Silk's dub poem "Babylon Be Still" are as infectious as they are righteous. The remaining songs, however, are mostly unspectacular, with the hip-hop-tinged "Are You Ready" (the chorus taking the melody from Isley Jasper Isley's "Caravan of Love") being borderline corny. |
