| Rasta Still De 'Bout (Minor7Flat5, 2005)
Although Josie Mel (formerly Josie Melody -- oddly, the names of two of the three members of Josie & The Pussycats) has been in the industry for over a decade, he's still an "up-and-coming" roots reggae singer, but his second album, Rasta Still De 'Bout, may just signal his arrival. The title track (also available on Lutan Fyah's Phantom War, but it was Josie Mel's song first) was a smash hit, and rightly so. It balances a jaunty, carefree one-drop rhythm with engaging lyrics about the reaction of friends and family to Mel's decision to become a Rastafarian. "Consecrate Yourself" is just as good, establishing a righteous angle on this album that's tempered by heartfelt love songs like "Run Away" and "All Over Your Face" (the latter an intriguing monologue from a now happily married Mel to an ex-girlfriend who'd dumped him in the past). Mel sounds at home in either style, as his vocals are pleasant and soulful, a bit like a more expressive Cocoa Tea. If you are familiar with other Minor7Flat5 releases, you may recognize some of the music on Rasta Still De 'Bout, like "Let's Party," "Consecrate Yourself" (used on Anthony B's "My Hope" and "Global Awareness," respectively), "I Feel Better" (Bounty Killer's "West Indies"), and "Why?" (Turbulence's "Holiday"). In fact, at least 10 of the 12 riddims here have been used on other Minor7Flat5 albums (the only real complaint you could have about Andreas "Brotherman" Christophersen's productions), which could diminish the songs' impact a bit, but in general their quality shines through any potential staleness. However, dropping the final two, distinctly non-reggae tracks on Rasta Still De 'Bout would've left a better taste in my mouth. |
