Freedom Song (Zionway, 2004) Colorado isn't the first place you'd think of when
considering reggae hotbeds in the United States, but straight outta Boulder
comes the new Zionway label. Along
with fellow American Rocker T, Jus Goodie (born Justin Goodman) leads off the
label's offerings with his debut, Freedom Song.
A talented youth, Jus Goodie not only sings but also does a little
chatting and even co-produces and plays lead guitar on this set.
While most sing-jays nowadays are DJs who happen to sing, Jus Goodie is a
singer who can DJ. His chatting is
solid -- as evidenced on the dancehall tracks "Freedom Song" and
"Gwan With It" -- but it’s the tracks where he sings that stand out
the most. In particular, the
softer, more rootsy tunes showcase his emotional voice.
In particular, check out "Freedom Fighters," a powerful neo-classic
anthem. In a similar vein are
"Helping Hand," "Crying Out," the bouncy "Do Good," a fun
"Nice in
the Session," and the Middle East flavor of "How Beautiful It Is."
A couple of edgier, hip-hop-oriented tunes also stand out, the brooding
sound of “Push on Through” and the inspirational "Incredible." The digital riddims on the few dancehall cuts aren't
spectacular but are original and don't rely on recycled beats -- a welcome
change of pace on the dancehall scene. Overall,
Freedom Song is a heartfelt and inviting showcase of American talent. |
