| Everything I Own: The Best of Ken Boothe
(Trojan, 2003) *GUEST REVIEW* Ken Boothe is certainly one of the finest vocalists to emerge from Jamaica, and to a certain extent this album stands in testament to this statement. Boothe's soulful voice carries the listener through the entire 25 track set with few low points. If you have yet to discover Ken Boothe, then I highly recommend you do so right away (in some form or another). This album gathers his rock steady hits from the late sixties as well as some early reggae hits from the seventies. Boothe differs from a multitude of other reggae artists in that praises of Jah are rarely heard in his work. His content is that of the lover and the sufferer. Highpoints of the album include "Is It Because I'm Black?"; a emotional protest song, "Freedom Day"; a plea for unity and justice, "That's the Way Nature Planned It," as well as "You're No Good," "Let Go," and "Old Fashioned Way." The collection could have done without some of the covers, such as an only marginal version of the over-used "Godfather Theme," but overall the album is a must-have that should satisfy the palate of any reggae fan. - Enrique Wedgwood Young |
