Something Real (RAS, 1995) This is truly some of the most generic reggae I've ever heard. Songs like "Ring Ding" and "Long Time" are that sterile, fast-paced, obscenely happy music that seems to be played mostly for tourists. Most of the tracks here are similarly annoying in tone, with only the title cut being listenable. "Don't You Know" and "Sha-Ba-Da" thankfully are better than the rest, although they ("Sha-Ba-Da" in particular) are still slanted toward a mainstream audience, with the occasional rock guitar and saxophone thrown in -- elements that would be OK if the songs weren't already so bubbly. A more appropriate title would be Something Real Bad. |
