| Dread Hot in Africa (Makasound, 2006) Leroy Smart is one of those artists that you have heard of and you may have even heard, but if you had to name one of his songs to save your life, you might rue not renewing that life insurance policy. But never fear; Dread Hot in Africa is here to the rescue! This is a solid showcase for Smart's striking, passionate vocals -- sort of like a huskier version of Horace Andy or Linval Thompson -- along with the rich, crashing rockers music (akin to the Bunny Lee-produced sound of Johnny Clarke), featuring legendary musicians from Sly & Robbie to Carlton "Santa" Davis to Earl "Chinna" Smith, Ansel Collins, Tommy McCook, Tony Chin, and more. This Makasound album is a welcome re-release of the 12 tracks from the original 1977 set of the same name, combined with four bonus songs recorded between 1975 and 1978. So now if anyone asks you to name your favorite Leroy Smart song, you can reply knowingly, "Well, 'Beautiful Rainbow,' 'Africa,' 'Walk Away From Trouble,' and 'Love Everyone' are all excellent!"
