The Wolf That House Built (Wired, 1995)

*GUEST REVIEW*
The combination of two genres on one album is not for the risk averse artist.  Moby's Play combined the Lomax archive with house music. On the other hand, Trout Mask Replica mixed Delta blues with free jazz and just about everything else Beefheart could thrown in.  Both these artists combine the raw emotion of the blues with their own imaginations to great effect.  So why not combine the blues with reggae or reggae production techniques?  Little Axe is essentially a band that attempts that fusion.  Skip McDonald is the founder and he is joined by On-U Sound regulars such as Keith Le Blanc, Talvin Singh and Doug Wimbish.  Adrian Sherwood and Skip are on production duties on this LP.  Essentially this is a decent blues album that gets filtered through Sherwood's ears.  So there are quite a few sounds that On-U devotees will pick up on.  At times the vocals are lower down in the mix than trad blues albums, but that does not detract from the album's quality.  Like most Adrian Sherwood projects, not all of this sounds amazing, but he and Skip should be congratulated for taking a risk and experimenting.
