Lovers for Lovers Volume 10 (Business, 1995) This collection of lovers rock tunes (with an album cover that looks like an ad for a sexual aid) opens with a series of remakes of '70s R&B songs that almost scared me off. The Heptones doing Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes' "I Miss You" and The Stylistics' "Break Up To Make Up," The Mighty Diamonds doing The Temptations' "Just My Imagination," Glen Ricks doing Earth Wind & Fire's "Reasons" -- it's all a bit too much to handle. Although I like (and possibly because I like) both the reggae acts and the original songs, the combination is fairly repulsive to me. Luckily, some fairly enjoyable original lovers tracks are included, two by the little-known Erica Gale -- the anxious, pleading "Don't Draw the Line" and "Paradise's Just For a Moment" -- and the tender "Golden Touch" by the equally little-known Valerie Harrison. A couple of unique tracks stand out because of their sound: Derrick Harriott's "Dancing the Reggae" is a fun party jam -- unlike the other songs, which carry largely melancholy tones -- and Pat Kelly's "Last Chance" has a bit of a rootsy twist, with its African drums peppering the rhythm. Still, nothing on Lovers for Lovers Volume 10 is truly great; I haven't heard any of the others in the series, so I can't tell you if this is typical or not. |
