| One Step Beyond (Stiff, 1979) *GUEST REVIEW* Two tone or second generation ska is forever associated with student discos. Maybe its the simple and effective songwriting that hooks the kids. But more than likely its the bluebeat on speed that keeps them dancing. Madness started as a two tone band, before mutating into a singles heavy pop video band. One Step Beyond is their high quality debut and demonstrates their respect for Prince Buster. Its filled with brass and great singles and is more Bad Manners than The Specials. It owes the legendary Ian Dury a debt, as well as a ska one. Bouncy, danceable and rather poppy this album deserves to be played to all those who forget about the fun aspects of reggae. - ragudave |
